Dersingham’s Hanover Court, a complex of 45 retirement flats housing nearly 60 residents, began their Christmas preparations early with an autumn fayre. The residents’ central lounge was colourfully decked out in Union flags which had been put up on the previous Wednesday when residents gathered to celebrate the Queen becoming the country’s longest-reigning monarch.

Beneath the flags the lounge was full of stalls offering all manner of gifts and competitions with the aim of raising some of the £1,000 needed to make sure every resident can enjoy a four-course Christmas lunch and a free pre-Christmas party. It’s all arranged by a committee made up of residents and all the stalls were run by residents who welcomed a constant stream of visitors. Money is also used for other events and outings.
