Enthusiasm for the chance to show off their story-writing skills was evident when all the 115 pupils at Docking primary school entered a writing competition held in conjunction with the village’s annual book festival last month.

And the winners, from left, Olivia Matkin, Isabel King, Eleanor Paterson and Ava Sibbons, received their prizes at a special assembly on Friday.

The subjects set for each of the older age groups were Egyptians, Space and an Adventure story while the reception class were asked to do a piece of work to show off their descriptive writing skills.

The school’s literary co-ordinator, Catherine Smith, said: “Not everyone could be a winner but there were lots of fantastic stories.”

The entries were judged by the rector of the village’s St Mary’s Church, the Rev Peter Cook, on their skills in the use of vocabulary, the neatness of their hand-writing and general presentation.
