Businesses in the Downham area will have a greater voice in the town after an action committee has been formed.

Downham Town Team has recently been formed to give firms the chance to highlight and work together to resolve issues.

So far 20 firms have supported the initiative but more are urged to come forward and get involved.

Parking and the possible need for CCTV in the town are some of the issues highlighted in the group’s inaugural meeting.

One of the people behind the scheme is Simon Prior, owner of Framing Art in the High Street, who is urging more firms to get involved.

He said: “We have so many good things going for the town - it is not broken but we just think that it can be made better. We can do that by working together rather than individually.

“At the moment there is no collective voice for businesses and this is a way of trying to get things changed for the better but also a chance to network and share ideas.

“We are aiming to give businesses a collective voice which will be for the benefit of businesses in the town and the surrounding area.”

The team is open to firms in the town centre, industrial estates and the surrounding villages.

Members got together earlier this week for their first meeting when issues were raised, including the lack of on-street parking in the town for shoppers.

Businesses are also being encouraged to join Downham in Bloom and raised concerns about housing being built in the town centre with few car parking spaces.

A number of shops have suffered broken windows at night and the group may also be looking into the need for CCTV in Downham.

The introduction of charges at the Wales Court car park were also discussed.

Mr Prior said “It is really early days but the other car parks are filling up quickly.”
