Members of Downham Rotary Club are celebrating after raising £10,000 to fund a new school for a village close to Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone.

Chairman of the club’s international committee Carole Samuel and colleagues visited Korvatichi last year and saw the dreadful state of the area’s school.

Since returning from the visit Mrs Samuel has been visiting 20 clubs in the Eastern region and how has raised the £10,000 needed to refurbish the school’s junior block.

The school’s headteacher has reached an agreement with a local builder and an account has been opened with a Belarusian bank to enable the transfer of staged payments.

Work on the school is due to begin in the spring.

Carole and John Samuel will visit the village later this year to inspect the renovations and also sign off the project.
