Downham Market couple have been without a phone line since Christmas

The joy of buying a new home has soured for a Downham couple who have been fighting since Christmas to have a phone line connected.

Rebecca Link and Oliver Hubbard say a number of homes on the new Ben Bailey estate at Willow Tree Park, Downham, are still not hooked up to a phone line as no infrastructure has been laid.

The couple have rung up a £200 mobile phone bill in trying to get the problem sorted with the developer and BT but are no closer to resolving the issue.

Miss Link, a junior planner and Mr Hubbard, who moved into their £173,000 home in Daisy Lane on December 23, are having to go to their family homes to access emails, which are needed for work.

Mr Hubbard, a self-employed builder, said: “I would expect a phone line to be installed in a new home.

“They don’t care once they have your money. We both require the internet for work.”

A BT spokesman said: “We are sorry for the problems on getting these lines in place.

“We have been working to get these in but have encountered numerous blockages in the underground network which has delayed our ability to get this completed.

“We are currently reviewing the best way forward, on whether we have to carry out some sensitive engineering works on site or whether we are able to install this additional cabling via another route. We are doing all we can to get this done as quickly as possible.”

A spokesman for Ben Bailey Homes added: “We are aware of the problem with some of the telephone lines at our Willow Tree Park development and understand that this is causing inconvenience for some of our residents.

“The problem is off-site and is due to a collapse at BT’s original exchange.

“BT is currently dealing with this and we are in liaison with them.”
