A new group formed to help support Downham Library held its first meeting last week, and now is looking for new members.

Downham Library Friends, which aims to develop activity ideas, holds fundraising events and library sales, met at the Priory Road venue last Friday for its initial gathering.

Library manager Fran Valentine said: “We had quite a few people come on Friday – we set eight people up for the group. Downham Library Friends is about supporting and advocating library services, supporting events, and having group discussions about what to have planned at the library.

“Those who signed up will be contacted by our community librarian Linda to tell them about the first proper meeting. If anyone would like to take part in shaping how the library decide what’s going on, they should join. They can get involved as much or as little as they like.”

Mrs Valentine added that if you missed the first meeting, it does not mean it is too late to get involved and act as a link between the library and the community.

She said: “Contact myself or Linda Tree at the library if you would like to join. You have to sign up to be invited to meetings, and the leaflets for these are at the staff desk.

“These friends groups are being set up in all Norfolk libraries. Gaywood Library has and Lynn library has or is just about to. If people are interested and are not sure if their library has a group, they should pop along to their local library and ask about the team there about it.”
