A Downham trader is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support by giving up alcohol during October.

Lawrence Welham is more than half-way through his Go Sober for October challenge and has raised nearly £300.

The Lewks owner is taking on the challenge in memory of his late wife Maureen, who died in 2008, along with other family members.

Mr Welham, who is now married to Gill, enjoyed his last glass of Prosecco in September.

He said: “I usually have a small glass of wine with my evening meal. I have had a lot of support if I accidentally hover over a bottle of wine but sparkling water is now my drink. I’ve lost 2kg in weight.

“I’ve had a fantastic response from people who have been very generous.”
