East meets West at Dersingham

LOCALS were treated to a taste of China when Dersingham hosted an "East meets East" event.

Deputy Borough Mayor Michael Langwade joined chairman of the West Norfolk and District Chinese Association Kwai Lee for a demonstration of Chinese cooking at the event at Hanover Court, Dersingham's sheltered housing scheme for retired people.

The event followed on from two other successful events featuring the local Chinese community, one held at the Hanover scheme in William Booth Road, Lynn, last April, and another held at the Dersingham scheme, in Holyrood Drive, in June.

Mrs Vicky Gallagher, who used to be manager at the Dersingham scheme but is now manager at Lynn, explained how the April event had been a reminiscence day, with a chance for residents and members of the local Chinese community to talk about cultural differences.

The June event had been a Chinese open day, including Tai Chi demonstrations and a painting competition. As a result of the events to build links with the Chinese community, many members of which live in Fairstead, Lynn, Hanover won a quality and diversity award handed down through scheme owners Hanover Housing Association.

The award, 500, was then used to stage Monday's event which, attended by around 50 people, had gone brilliantly, Mrs Gallagher told told the Lynn News.
