YOUNG boffins devised ingenious ways of sorting coins during a one-day competition.

The Rotary Club of Downham set the challenge to about 75 youngsters during its annual Schools’ Technology Competition.

Sixth form and Year 9 pupils from Downham, Terrington St Clement and Methwold High Schools competed in the contest on Tuesday last week.

Youngsters working in teams of four were asked to create ways of sorting coins using materials handed out in Downham Town Hall on the day.

The Key Stage 3 competition was won by Terrington pupils Luke Mitchell, Troy Brown, Jason Chown and Luke Marks with their simple device while the trophy for the sixth form section went to Josh Moreton, Callum Lusher and Robert McAdam, from Downham.

One of the competition organisers is Alan Culley, who is chairman of the Rotary’s community service committee. He has praised the youngsters for their designs in the competition, which was sponsored by BAE Systems.

Mr Culley said: “There were quite a few ideas. Some were extremely innovative and ever so simple and clever.

“We were very impressed by the standard of ideas which came through.”
