Year 6 students at Eastgate Academy have been learning valuable life skills in special weekly enrichment classes.

Activities included grow-your-own vegetable sessions and creating meals for under £5, such as shepherd’s pie, which can be taken home and then recreated with family members.

Students are now even equipped with website building knowledge and DIY skills to tile/paint walls with emulsion, attach skirting board, architrave, prime and gloss paint.

Principal Linda Hothersall said: “Life skills sessions are always well received by the Year 6 students and are a welcome variation to the academic subjects.

“Chopping an onion was great fun as you can probably imagine. We’ve made some great meals and the vegetable patch is looking fantastic.

“These are skills the children can take right through to adult life.”
