PALM Paper’s chief executive had a gas when he officially opened new science laboratories at a Lynn high school.
Dr Wolfgang Palm was given the chance to set off an explosive reaction by igniting soap bubbles filled with hydrogen – with impressive results as our photograph shows.
Andrew Johnson, the head of Springwood High School, said the new science block had two laboratories on the ground floor and a staff area with IT facilities on the first floor. The building is named the Jubilee Laboratories in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year.
Cutting the ribbon, Dr Palm said investing in facilities for young people was essential because they represented the future. He also congratulated the school on the quality of the building.
Mr Johnson said the new laboratories were needed due to increasing numbers of pupils sitting A level sciences.

“The additional lab space will provide more opportunities for practical work. The facilities are up-to-date and modern and it’s a nice, brand new environment for the students,” he said.
Dr Palm’s visit was arranged through the managing director of Palm Paper, Derek Harman, who is a governor of the school. Other guests included West Norfolk Mayor and Mayoress Colin and Susan Sampson.
