Students investigating road safety in Swaffham recently got the chance to check on vehicle speeds along Brandon Road in the town.

The group, pictured above, used a speed gun under guidance from Sergeant Peter Howlett of the local roads policing unit, from a lay-by a short distance from the Nicholas Hamond Academy. He then did a question and answer session on road safety.

An academy spokesman said: “They were surprised to see speeds exceeding the 30mph speed limit. One driver, who was doing 47mph along the main road, was stopped by Sgt Howlett and given a stern lecture.”

The academy’s Year 9 alternative curriculum enhancement students also had a presentation from Norfolk County Council’s area road safety officer Philip Archer. They are looking at road safety as part of their wider key skills course.
