CARING students from Swaffham Hamond’s High School will be heading out to Kenya in February to take part in a community project involving schools there.

The group of 21 students will be working in deprived areas of the capital, Nairobi, and specifically in three primary schools, where they will provide resources and lead lessons.

They are also aiming to improve their leadership skills by working closely with students from high schools in the area, including the famous Starehe Boys’ Centre.

Assistant head Trudy Welham said: “We believe this is an amazing opportunity for our students and hope that we can develop links with these schools and continue to work with them on future projects.”

To secure their places on the trip, the Hamond’s students have pledged to work together to raise the funds for the cost of the visit – which works out at £1,200 for each of them.

They have been running car washing sessions and plan to hold a designer clothes sale with stock donated from a parent. One of the girls will be doing a sponsored parachute jump and various other events are being organised.

The team are also recruiting the help of local schools and community groups with the fundraising task.

Headteacher Stuart Bailey, who has previously visited Starehe Boys’ School, described past trips as “life changing” .

The group would welcome support from local companies, and any offers of help should be made to Ms Welham on 01760 721480.
