West Lynn: Marshfields gets outstanding mark

A HOME which provides short breaks for children with special needs has been judged outstanding for the care and support given by staff.

Marshfields Resource Centre, in West Lynn, has been pronounced officially outstanding in every area thanks to their recent Ofsted report.

The centre provides respite care and accommodation for up to four young people at a time who enjoy activities like days out, arts and crafts, gardening and music.

Inspectors said: “Young people make outstanding progress...and thrive in a supportive environment with consistent boundaries.

“Exceptional support from staff helps them to develop confidence to enjoy new experiences.”

Young people enjoyed staying at the home, the report, adds, and were able to develop life skills and independence.

Norfolk County Council invested £123,000 in transforming the home at the end of 2010 by extending the bathroom, developing a new utility room and improving access.

The centre offered an “excellent standard of accommodation”, the report adds, where young people could enjoy the facilities, including a sensory room and soft play area. Inspectors added that young people staying at the home were “able to develop life skills and learn how to be independent to maximise their own abilities.”

They also found good communication between staff and children, stating that young people’s views were “valued and encouraged” and staff had a detailed knowledge of how each young person voiced opinions and feelings.

Outcomes for young people, the quality of care, safeguarding and leadership and management were all found to be outstanding.

Alison Thomas, Norfolk County Council cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We have extremely dedicated staff at Marshfields.

“I would like to congratulate them on this outstanding report, which recognises that they are always prepared to go the extra mile for the children they look after.

Short breaks gave young people the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities and provided a vital break for parents and carers, she added.

“We are thrilled that Ofsted has recognised its fantastic work,” she said.

David Harwood, county councillor for Clenchwarton and King’s Lynn South, said: “Marshfields provides much needed support to families in West Norfolk.

“I am delighted to see it receive such praise.”
