Fire station green light

A SECOND fire station for Lynn will be operation in two years after being granted funding.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue will be building a new station in Horsley Field Industrial Estate, off the Hardwick roundabout.

The service says that the town needs a second station after the population has grown and a development of industrial on the south east side.

Norfolk County Council has included £2 million worth of funding in its 2012 and 2013 budget, which was presented to Cabinet yesterday.

Lynn’s current station, in Kilhams Way, North Lynn, is manned by two full-time crews and a retained crew.

Assistant chief fire officer Roy Harold said: “We have been looking at the growth of the population in Lynn and the development of the industry, the regeneration, Palm Paper and what has been going on at the Campbell’s site.

“We know from looking at the risk profile, we currently have all our fire resources on one side.

“We are pleased that the county recognises public safety and the role of fire service and is able to support us.”

The new station is expected to cost £2 million and will resemble an industrial unit.

The parcel of land is owned by the county council. The building is at the planning stage but chiefs hope it will be operational in two years.

The station will be covering the south-east of Lynn.

The service is not planning to recruit additional firefighters.

But the new station may be manned by one of Lynn’s full time crews.

Mr Harold said: “We are not looking to change cover. This is about making sure we have the best cover.”

Lynn is also due to receive a new tender.
