WEST NORFOLK: Got a new gadget? Time to recycle your old ones

A new drive for West Norfolk residents to recycle their unwanted electrical goods has been launched.
County council chiefs have unveiled the Bring Them Don’t Bin Them initiative which is intended to encourage householders to take old items to main recycling centres, such as the Willows Business Park at Saddlebow, instead of just throwing them away.
Kate Murrell, Norfolk County Council’s waste reduction and recycling manager, said: “Christmas is a great time of year for receiving new electronics and electricals, whether they’re the latest gadget, toy or appliance.
“It’s also a time when irons run out of steam, hairstraighteners go cold on us and our fairy lights fail.
“That leaves literally thousands of electrical and electronic items unwanted or redundant after the festive period.
“Essentially, if it plugs in, uses batteries or needs charging, it can be recycled.”
The council says more and more people are beginning to recycle old electricals, but that much more still needs to be done in order to reduce the amount being thrown away.
They say electrical waste is the fastest growing waste stream and is increasing by around five per cent per year nationally.
Now, residents who take items ranging from mobile phones and chargers to televisions and refrigerators to any of the council’s 20 main recycling centres will be entered into a quarterly draw to win £100 worth of vouchers.
Council deputy leader Bill Borrett said: “Our message is very simple – please don’t put your unwanted electricals in your bin. Bring them along to one of our recycling centres where you can be sure they’ll be recycled instead of being dumped in landfill.”
Goods can be taken to sites including the Willows Business Park at Saddlebow, Crimplesham Road, West Dereham, and Helhoughton Road, Fakenham.
