Fakenham: Crackdown on parking?
THERE was some concern at the recent Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting about taxi parking in Fakenham.
This was prompted by the fact that with at least two companies operating locally there is no official taxi rank recognised by both the police and the local authority. In other words, plying for hire is a moveable feast with vehicles choosing their own preferred spots, principally around the market place.
The matter was raised at this month's town council meeting in the knowledge that negotiations are taking place between the companies and both the police and the council.
Perhaps the best suggestion was the idea to commandeer a few spaces on the Bridge Street car park to accommodate the vehicles.
This is close to the town centre and, once established, would enable the taxis to carry out their function efficiently and legally.
Of rather more disquiet was the amount of random and indiscriminate parking in the middle of town. Despite restriction notices, it's normal for vehicles to stop just about anywhere and cause genuine hazards to pedestrians and other road users. Rarely are police on traffic-monitoring duty and the solitary traffic warden who has to cover a number of towns in the district is more noticeable by his absence.
At least this problem has now been targeted as one of the priorities for the Safer Neighbourhood Team in the coming weeks and it will be interesting to see what effect a higher police profile has on chaotic parking.
Having just heard that Glen Roeder has been relieved of his managerial position with Norwich City it seems appropriate to reflect on the team's season so far from the point of view of the faithful supporters who turn out for every home game on the Sanders bus from Highfield Road.
I've yet to miss a match and have been amazed by their good nature and good humour. There have been few genuine highlights, to be honest, with only the Wolves and Ipswich games really creating the kind of optimistic buzz on the homeward journey which envisages better times ahead.
Sadly, the players have not lived up to expectations and the team's position in the league is a fair reflection of its achievements. The manager has had to pay the price – as managers do who dip down into relegation territory – and we must hope that his replacement sparks a revival in fortunes.
Local hero Mervyn King has done it again, winning the world pairs title with Aussie Kelvin Kerkow at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton-on-Sea. This is his second doubles crown to add to the world singles title he won in 2006. At the time of writing, Mervyn is still in contention to recapture his singles crown and is also involved in the mixed pairs.
There's bound to be plenty of support from his Gallow club colleagues and friends in Fakenham and let's hope he makes it through.
