'Finish children's play park' demand

A FED-UP resident of a West Lynn housing development is demanding action this week over an unfinished play park which looks "horrible".

Verity Atkins, a resident of Poppyfields on the Abbey Grove development off Main Road, said play areas marked on the plans had not been completed and attempts to resolve the situation with developer Taylor Wimpey had failed.

Mrs Atkins, husband Tom and daughter Bethany (10) moved to their new semi-detached home from North Lynn just over a year ago and were attracted, in part, by the promise of play parks there.

“We were told everything would be done last autumn,” said Mrs Atkins (30), who said she understood a planned play park on the right of the site was set to have play equipment including a slide and some swings.

“Later on, we were told there was only going to be one of those ‘springy chickens’,” she said – though nothing had happened since.

There should also be a play park at the bottom of the development, said Mrs Atkins.

Both areas had been given a hard area in parts and then left, she said. Now weeds were growing.

A total of 51 houses were built at Abbey Grove by Bryant Homes – now falling under the umbrella of Taylor Wimpey following a merger – the building completed in March 2008.

Mrs Atkins was concerned because she felt Taylor Wimpey were still developing at Kings Reach, Fairstead, in Lynn, and she understood parks were still going in there. The same was happening at Taylor Wimpey’s Wootton Meadows development in South Wootton, she said.

Children who wanted to play in the area had nowhere to go and to add to the problems, people had begun dumping rubbish on areas of unfinished ground, said Mrs Atkins.

“I just want them to finish what they said they were going to,” she told the Lynn News.

A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said: “We are pleased to have been made aware of the situation regarding the play area at our development.

“We are now in discussions with the council to finalise the plans and carry out the additional work that’s necessary.”

A spokesman for West Norfolk Council said: “Our planning department is aware and has visited the site and are currently in negotiation with the developers to bring this play area to completion.”
