Fish are to be removed from a pond on the Willows nature reserve in Downham next week so officials can work out how the site can be managed.

Borough council officials say fish have been left in a distressed state because of very low oxygen levels in the water, despite attempts by Environment Agency staff to tackle the issue.

The pond will be fenced off while the fish are removed and the water is pumped out.

David Pope, West Norfolk Council’s cabinet member for leisure and public space, said they hoped to be able to restock the pond with fish once the work is completed, but warned it was “too early to say” whether that would be possible.
