Former Maltese diplomat joins Swaffham Lions

People from many walks of life contribute to the work of Swaffham’s community groups and the town can now boast a former diplomat in its ranks.

That’s because an ex-Maltese ambassador has joined the Swaffham Lions, having recently moved to the area.

Dr George Cassar was his country’s man in Libya and Egypt during his diplomatic career and has now settled in Swaffham with his wife, Jane.

Club officials say Dr Cassar, who was a member of the Lions in Malta before his move to Norfolk, is the fifth new member to join them in the last two months alone. And they are confident that more will join in the months ahead.

Dr Cassar also follows in the diplomatic footsteps of Lorne Green, of Snettisham, who moved to Norfolk following a career in the Canadian diplomatic services and is bidding to become its police and crime commissioner.
