Black cats desperate for new homes are filling the pens of a full rescue shelter.

Cats Protection Downham has just one of its 61 pens empty and workers are urgently appealing for people to offer up a home.

Unfortunately, the majority of cats are either black or black and white, which are not proving popular with potential owners.

But with the arrival of spring weather, staff at the Stowbridge shelter are bracing themselves for an influx of kittens.

Senior cat care assistant Becky Cavanagh says it is heartbreaking to see so many black cats in the pens.

She said: “People tend to go for ginger cats or tortoiseshells and we find that black or black and white cats are left behind.

“They never say why they don’t want a black cat. There could be a suspicious element to it or people are attracted to bright colours.

“This is a phenomenon in the rescue industry.

“We would really urge people that when they are looking for a new pet to go for one which will suit their circumstances. Look at the personality and not just the colour.”

The shelter is caring for more than 25 pure black or black and white cats.

Among them is Pencil, who has been at the shelter since last summer.

He was brought to a vets badly dehydrated as a stray and had been briefly adopted but unfortunately the woman’s circumstances changed.

Miss Cavanagh said: “He is such a sweetheart.”
