Businesses in Lynn are being urged to come forward and help save a town community facility from potential closure.
Borough council chiefs have admitted that the Discovery Centre in North Lynn may already have shut, because of funding problems, had it not been for the efforts of its board.
And, while they insist the centre will remain open, they have also pleaded for anyone who may have ideas for how tosupport the Columbia Way facility to come forward.
Answering questions on the issue at the borough council’s latest meeting, housing portfolio holder Adrian Lawrence said the centre was reverting back to what he termed as its “core functions.”
He said: “Funding streams are being looked at all the time and through time its become more and more difficult to get funding.
“They are actively looking for fundings and, as a borough, we supply some as do Norfolk County Council and the police.”
But Labour’s Ian Gourlay suggested that the town’s business community should be approached to see what support it could provide.
He said he understood the challenges faced by facilities like the Discovery Centre, because of his involvement with community sites in his own Fairstead ward.
He also urged members to remember the Discovery Centre’s role as a provider of activities for young people across the whole borough.
Mr Gourlay said: “These centres do have funding issues and daytime activity doesn’t pay to keep these things open.
“There is a danger the Discovery Centre will close altogether. Maybe we should have a campaign, ‘Business, please help.’”
Mr Lawrence said: “The board has worked extremely hard and will continue to ensure the Discovery Centre, will keep going.
“If it had done nothing there is a possibility it wouldnt be there.
“We want it to go forward, I want it to go forward. It does a lot of fantastic work for young people across the borough. If anybody can think of funding that could run things, please let the board know.”
Despite several requests, representatives of the Discovery Centre have not responded to requests for comment.
