College of West Anglia cookery student Lauren Smith, pictured above, served up a real treat as she wowed judges at a Rotary Young Chef competition on Saturday.

Lauren, 17, from Gayton, won first prize with her three-course menu of Thai-style mussels, Sea Bream on a warm carrot salad and Layered cheesecake. and now progresses to a regional final to be held in Hertfordshire next month.

She said: “It was a real shock to win and I’m now really looking forward to the regional final. It’s given me experience and a confidence boost along the way.”

Hilary Auld, the college’s head of hospitality and catering, added: “Lauren is a shining example of our professional cookery students.

“Her talent and calmness under pressure is outstanding and we will all be behind her when she competes in the Regional final.”
