A Gaywood woman will be “running miles for smiles” when she gears up to run 100 miles in a year to help poorly and bereaved children.

Fay Martyn has never run more than three miles, but is about to embark on the challenge in a bid to raise cash for two West Norfolk children’s charities.

The 21-year-old, of Riverview Way, wants to raise at least £1,000 each for Hunstanton cancer charity Families Against Neuroblastoma and Lynn-based Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which supports children of men and women killed while serving in the Armed Forces.

The trainee make-up artist will start her challenge on Sunday, May 4, when she lines up at the start of the 10k Grand East Anglia Run (GEAR) in Lynn.

She also plans to take part in the Hunstanton 10k Beach Run in June, and is currently researching other runs to sign up for.

She said: “Having never ran more than three miles I’m about to start training to run double that distance ready for GEAR in May.

“I started running last year and I love running, so it was a good option for me when it came to raising money.

“I’m excited about the challenge, because I love running. But I have a lot of miles to run yet so I’m also fairly nervous too.”

Miss Martyn, who also volunteers once-a-week at Shepreth Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire, decided to raise money for her chosen two charities as she loves children.

“I have no children of my own, but I do have five nieces and nephews,” she said.

“Children deserve to smile all the time. They don’t deserve to be in hospital, fighting disease or to suffer the loss of a parent.

“But if it comes to that, I want to help them smile again despite everything that has happened. The two charities I’ve chosen do wonderful work for children and their families.”

Miss Martyn has set up an online fundraising page and a blog, where she will post regular training updates.
