A Wisbech businessman has warned that someone could be badly injured unless action is taken to tackle congestion caused by bad parking close to his premises.

Police say they are monitoring the situation in Enterprise Way and will fine people for flouting the rules where necessary.

But Steve Bushell, who owns SB Components believes much stronger action is needed to reduce the risks he says are being posed to motorists and pedestrians alike.

He said: “There are people having to walk in the road while cars are parked on double yellow lines and over the pavements. The police don’t seem able to do anything about it.

“Someone is going to get seriously hurt.”

Mr Bushell claimed that as many as 30 parked vehicles can be causing problems for other roads users, including his own delivery drivers, in the area at peak times.

He said his staff have parking spaces available on the site and he has raised his concerns with police on several occasions.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: “We have received reports of inconsiderate and at times illegal parking in Enterprise Way in Wisbech.

“The situation is being monitored and advice or tickets will be issued where necessary.”

Mr Bushell’s plea comes amid a renewed focus on parking concerns in the town.

Last month, police joined forces with fire service chiefs to launch a new campaign to highlight the problems that can be caused to emergency services vehicles by illegal parking.

Officers have already issued dozens of fines to drivers for breaching parking rules in the town centre, including one which was ticketed when an ambulance struck scaffolding while trying to manoeuvre around it.

At its peak, officers said they were issuing as many as five tickets per day.
