Organisers are laying down the gauntlet for people across West Norfolk to enter a raft race.

The people behind Hilgay Raft Race are hoping to replicate the success of last summer’s event by attracting even more teams onto the river.

A record entry of 22 rafts raced along the River Wissey in July last year while more than 1,000 spectators were throwing flour bombs from the banks.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, July 13, and will be raising money for the Stroke Association.

One of the race’s organisers Ali Dent has received interest from six teams so far and is hoping that more will fill in this entry form.

He said: “We are pleased with the response so far but we are hoping for more.

“Six teams are hopefully coming along including Terrington Young Farmers.”

Awards will be given to the race winning team, best fancy dress and most sponsorship money raised.

Mr Dent, who has competed in previous years dressed as a wrestler, is advising teams to start their preparations early.

He said: “It is best if they start building the raft a little bit before the event. Some people leave it to the last minute and the results can be funny as the raft collapses.

“Barrels are a really good base and one team even used empty plastic bottles one year.”

Entry costs £40 for a team.
