Crowds gathered to watch as youngsters sang and laughed during the grand opening of Hunstanton’s Spinney.

Hunstanton Chamber of Trade organised a fun packed day for scores of families to enjoy the new-look Spinney.

The site was given a £300,000 make-over to provide a focal point for the town and a square for events to be held.

West Norfolk Mayor Elizabeth Watson and her counterpart from Hunstanton Elaine Clutton cut the ribbon to officially open the square.

Families enjoyed watching the John Giller’s youth drama group perform songs from a forthcoming show along with a Punch and Judy show.

The event, which was introduced by Cliff Allman, also included performances by Hunstanton Concert Band and Tommy the Clown.

Youngsters had their faces painted, enjoyed a treasure hunt around the town’s shops and a fancy dress competition.

Michael Ruston, chamber of trade secretary, was delighted with the day’s success.

He said: “It was a nice afternoon and we had a good crowd of people there.

“It was good to see The Spinney being used for a community activity. We hope the canopy will remain in place for the rest of the season and hope this will encourage other people to hold regular events there.”
