The memorial gardens at Mintlyn Crematorium have been awarded a Green Flag marking it out as one of the best in the country.

The memorial gardens, along with The Walks, Tower Gardens in Lynn and Boston Square Gardens and The Esplanade in Hunstanton are among a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces nationwide that will have received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

David Pope, cabinet member for ICT, leisure and public space, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive so many Green Flag Awards this year from Keep Britain Tidy.

“We are particularly pleased to have achieved a Green Flag for the memorial gardens at Mintlyn.

“These gardens, which are made up of The Walks, The Lawns, The Woodland Glades, the Garden of Comtemplation and the Conifer Gardens, require a high level of maintenance and have to be sensitively cared for because they are almost an extension of the crematorium.

“The gardeners at Mintlyn work tirelessly to look after the myriad shrubs, trees and other plants that grow in the acidic soil and to ensure that each of the areas are well kept as they know that people come here to remember their loved ones.

“They understand the need for dignity and respect in the work they do and the requirement to create a tranquil and beautiful environment.

“The memorial gardens as a whole are a place for quiet contemplation and peaceful reflection.

“This award recognises that this is a green space of the very highest quality and one that we can be very proud of indeed.”

The opportunity to enjoy one of the borough’s other award-winning parks comes next week when The Walks plays host to Sherwood Forest’s finest hero - Robin Hood. This musical takes place on Tuesday, at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from the Corn Exchange on 01553 764864.
