A Heacham biker is planning to ride 7,000 miles to the Arctic Circle to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care in memory of his parents, both lost to the disease within four years.

Chris Harris, 44, was devastated by the loss of his mother within weeks of her being diagnosed with lung cancer, followed by his father, a year ago, who had lung and stomach cancer.

He said: “This was an extremely hard point in my life and I couldn’t have managed without my partner, Caroline. It is hard enough to lose one parent, but to lose both – and my grandfather – as a teenager.

“I think that Macmillan is a very worthy cause because it does so much to help keep life as normal as possible for sufferers and their families.”

Now he will take on a huge challenge with a group of IT workers who share a passion for motorcycling, when they set off on May 21.

The team of four, who come from Belfast, Preston and Ohio, USA, will start their journey in Denmark before travelling through Sweden, Norway and Finland.

They will be travelling for up to nine hours a day in order to reach the highest possible part of the Arctic Circle, dependent on weather, in two weeks.

Chris said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it certainly isn’t a holiday. None of us have done anything like this before and one guy hasn’t even camped before, so it will be something new for all of us. We all wanted to do a tour of some kind, but then we thought why not do it for charity?

“It’s one thing to take a bike to Scotland, but something like this – we’ll be wondering how to beat it next year!”

Chris will be taking on the challenge with Belfast’s Paul Mooney, Preston’s Roy McGeoch and Ohio’s Gregg Eldred, who are all keen motorcyclists.

The group have set themselves the target of raising £4,000 but are hoping to raise even more than that.
