While many enjoy a slower pace of life as they get older, care home residents in Heacham have been getting on their bikes this week to take on a cross-country fundraising challenge without even leaving the village.

Residents, their friends and relatives, and staff from the Fridhem rest home in Station Road are joining forces to complete the 837 mile distance between John O’Groats and Lands End.

That’s because they’re clocking up the miles on an exercise bike, which has been specially donated by the LA Fitness studio in Lynn.

The challenge began on Monday and organisers hope to have completed the distance by next weekend.

Marie Rawnsley, the home’s activities co-ordinator, pictured above third from left, said: “By all doing a few hours or miles when we can we hope to raise money for the residents’ social and entertainment fund to help enrich their lives in the autumn years.”

Also pictured as they waited to take their turn on the bike are from left, are Richard Gascoyne, Angela Bailey, Bill Cook, Grace Smith, Jo Prosper and Helen Marshall.
