Following in his dad’s footsteps an aspiring clown from Heacham has always wanted to join a top class circus and on Monday he had his chance.

Smithdon Smithdon High School student Tommy Rollason spent the day with Russell’s International Circus, which has been voted best circus in the UK in an online poll for the past four years.

Rusty Russell, director and chief clown, is determined to stay on top.

He said: “We have the best of the best with acts from around the world and we are pulling out all the stops this year to remain Britain’s Best.

Visiting Russell’s as they prepare for their run at Lynn for his interview young Tommy met the clowns he now knows he will be working with during the half-term break.

Along with acrobats from Hungary, aerial artistes and stars from the Romanian State Circus, Tommy, whose clown name is Rollo Junior will be joining clowns Alex Morley and Rusty and rehearsing his act ready for his first performance.

“It’s a funny kind of job but once the circus bug gets you it’s hard to resist and it’s great to have a young clown joining us at King’s Lynn; we are all looking forward to working with Tommy at the weekend.”

Tommy already has some circus experience under his belt. in February eh teamed up with the clowns of the Moldavian State Circus when they came to Lynn.

Tommy’s dad Sean joined the circus at just 16 years old and spent two very happy years performing in the Big Top.

He said; “The circus isn’t for everybody, but there’s mystery and excitement that you don’t find anywhere else.”
