BRAVE two-year-old Cameron Peters is fighting back after surviving an operation on a life-threatening brain tumour.

Cameron, from Downham, was diagnosed with autism until he was given an MRI scan – revealing the real reason for him staring into space and falling over.

His mother, Izzy Peters, 22, said: “We had a big meeting with doctors and nutritionists who were all convinced his behaviour was just evidence of his autistic tendencies.

“But I just had a feeling something else was wrong, it just seemed too simple, so when they offered an MRI scan, I agreed.”

The MRI scan showed he had a grade one brain tumour which was pressing on nerve endings and causing his abnormal behaviour.

Doctors performed a six-hour operation last October to remove the tumour but had to leave a small part behind, which could grow back.

Mrs Peters said: “It was complicated because the tumour was so close to his nerves, he could have been paralysed or died from the operation.”

They left a shunt to drain the fluid from Cameron’s head but he will need further treatment in the future.

“It’s been very hard, but I love him to bits. He’s been so brave and such a little star,” said Mrs Peters. “He’s the reason I get up in the morning.

“They didn’t think he had a chance to be out for Christmas, but he was and I had one day out of hospital with him before I gave birth to my daughter Rose.

“It’s been so exhausting. I’ve just been so worried the whole time. I just tried to stay strong for the children.”

Now a Lynn-based charity is hoping to raise money to provide the family with a much-needed holiday.

Emma Russell, 22, from North End, Lynn, is involved with the Kylie Foundation, a group of friends from Lynn who fund-raise for different causes in the area.

She said: “I went to college with Izzy and kept in touch through Facebook, and when I saw that Cameron was ill, I offered my number in case she needed to talk to anyone.

“She called me and told me everything that was going on with Cameron’s operation and how worried she was and I wanted to do more to help.

“My friend, Kylie Sidney had founded the Kylie Foundation and she agreed that we should help.

“We’re trying to raise enough money to send the family on holiday and donate the rest to Rudham Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”

Miss Peters added: “It was a really lovely surprise. I cried when I found out because it was just so kind and I didn’t expect anyone to do anything.”

The charity will be holding a series of events to support these causes .

There will be an indoor car boot and jumble sale on February 11 from 10am-3pm at the Calvery Chapel, behind Lynn bus station.

A “messy arts and crafts day” will be held at the North Lynn Discovery Centre on February 13 from 10am-4pm.

Bar Red will host a charity gig night on February 16 from 7-11.30pm, featuring performances from Slim Extinction, Billy the Kid and Only Young. Under 18s are welcome and there is a £3 entry charge.

To help or attend any of these events, or to donate to the cause, contact Mrs Russell on 07513 326547.
