A FIRE on a train did not stop a minister from enjoying a visit to a new £5.5 million “super surgery”.

Health minister Simon Burns was late arriving at Fakenham Medical Practice on Thursday last week due to the emergency on the Norwich to London line.

Staff from the practice moved into Meditrina House in December and work alongside colleagues from Norfolk Community Health and Care Trust, Norfolk County Council’s adult social care staff, along with hospital specialists who provide outreach services.

The building, which has 12 GPs and more than 100 staff, boasts a pharmacy, dedicated operating theatre and even a helipad

Chief executive James Fraser said the visit went very well.

He said: “The main thing was he got around and visited the departments and did the unveiling.

“He spoke about the seamless point of care we are offering which he hoped would be rolled out.”

One of the first hospital specialists to make use of the new day surgery unit is ophthalmic surgeon, Neil Johnson, who carries out a range of treatments including cataract operations.

He said: “This new facility enables us to provide high quality eye care and surgery closer to people’s homes, which my patients say is more convenient.”

A team of community nurses are based at the health centre and the practice also offers a range of clinics, including children’s speech and language therapy.

The annual lease for Meditrina House, developed by Medcentres, is paid for by NHS Norfolk and Waveney.
