Kind-hearted Gaywood shopkeeper Sam Patel was so moved by a family’s tragic loss that he set about raising funds for a charity to help others.
Mr Patel, who runs N & N Convenience Store in Marsh Lane, has been raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support for the past three years after hearing about one of his customers.
He learned that Shaugnah Eglen, a mother of three young boys and married to Barry, had died from cancer. Although he didn’t know the Eglens other than them being customers, as soon as he heard the news he took it upon himself to call round to the family’s home and offered his support.
Mr Eglen said: “He didn’t know us, yet he made the effort to bang on our door to see how we were. We were really touched and since that day the store has been raising money for Macmillan and we have become good friends.”
Helen Chapman, area fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “It’s this kind of generosity and thoughtfulness that goes a long way when you lose a loved one and we also want to thank Sam for all of the fundraising and support that he’s shown to the Eglen family .”
Mr Patel has handed over around £500 for the charity, which last week staged its Big Green Party when funds were raised at events throughout West Norfolk.
