A keen hiker is planning a fundraising mountain-climbing trip in aid of Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House and is going the extra mile by sporting fancy dress.

Jon Broomhall, who is a warehouse shift supervisor at Fakenham factory Kinnerton Confectionery, is hoping more hikers will join him on the charity trail which takes place in the Tatra Mountains in Poland.

The trip involves flying to Poland on Friday, June 20, two days of hiking, followed by a return to the UK on Monday, June 23.

“I have been over to Poland several times hiking and I wanted to combine doing this with raising money for charity by getting sponsorship,” said Jon, who lives in Testerton, near Fakenham.

The first day’s hiking will be up Mount Giewont, which is mostly wooded walks and valleys, although the last part of the journey is through rocks. Day two is a journey through the Valley of the Five Lakes. The cost for people taking part will be £80, which will cover travel within Poland, a stay at a family guesthouse and entry to the national park.

Jon is raising money for the hospice in memory of an elderly friend, Edward Callard, known as Ted, of Heacham, who died four years ago and who used to regularly visit Tapping House.

“I used to do his gardening and we became great friends,” said Jon. “He gave me guidance and confidence and helped me through a difficult time. Now I have got the chance to do something which he would be proud of by helping the hospice.

“He used to love the nurses there and appreciated all the help he received. I haven’t yet decided on my fancy dress outfit, but it might have a maritime theme as Ted served in the Royal Navy.”

If anyone is interested in joining Jon and two friends who are accompanying him on the hike, they should email him on tatrahiking@ymail.com. or call him on 01328 829641. Deposits need to be made by the end of April. More details about the trip can be seen at www.tatra-mountain-hiking.co.uk/charity and sponsors can go to justgiving.com/tatrahiking
