Shouldham: Damning report finds care in home fell short

A NURSING home has responded to a hard-hitting report which said staff were failing to protect the people in their care.

The Care Quality Commission report said Shouldham Hall in Shouldham, owned by the Holly Care Group, had failed to meet nine essential quality standards when it was inspected by the CQC during two recent visits.

Inspectors found mislabelled medicines, mould growing on the furniture and residents being fed frozen ready-meals.

Managers said they had voluntarily agreed to stop taking new residents until the failings were resolved, but added the report did not reflect current levels of care.

The CQC first raised concerns about the quality of service provided to residents in March last year. It has been working closely with Norfolk County Council to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents and has told the provider where improvements are needed.

The home’s interim manager, Matthew Welham, said it had stopped taking new residents as they tackled the failings highlighted by the report.

He said: “When the home experienced all the problems it engaged a management consultancy company, Careport, and we have seen where the shortfalls are and have been working with the owner to put them right.”

Mr Welham said time and money had been invested in new furniture, new cleaning schedules and additional staff.

He added: “This report doesn’t reflect what is going on in the home now and we are receiving support from relatives of residents.”

A county council spokesman said: “We have been aware of concerns about the care provided at Shouldham Hall since the middle of last year and have been working with the home to address these ever since.

“While concerns still exist, the home has an improvement plan in place and has taken some good steps forward, and we expect this to continue as a matter of urgency.

“We are monitoring the quality of care at Shouldham Hall very closely and both health and social care professionals have been regularly reviewing residents and making visits. We are also in touch with relatives of its residents.”

Shouldham Hall’s new manager, Sue Lancaster, is due to start work on Monday.
