WEST WINCH: From heart op to fitness class in five months
Linda Mattinson will be running new Bokwa fitness classes despite undergoing open heart surgery.
A fitness instructor who had open-heart surgery just five months ago was back in front of a class teaching the latest high energy exercise craze yesterday.
Linda Mattinson, of West Winch, launched her new Bokwa class yesterday, despite spending two weeks in Papworth Hospital in August.
During a Bokwa class participants draw letters and numbers with their feet to the latest music.
Miss Mattinson was born with aortic stenosis, a disease of the heart valves in which the opening of the aortic valve is narrowed.
The experienced fitness instructor has always led a very active life with no operations, but a heart murmur was detected during pregnancy.
During the eight hour operationMiss Mattinson’s sternum was broken and she was cut from her neck to her stomach.
A main valve on her heart was changed, along with a section of the main blood vessel which comes out of her heart.
She said: “Five months ago I was laying in Papworth, then when I got home I couldn’t even walk my little boy to school. It has taken until now to exercise again. If I can do it anyone can.”
Miss Mattinson’s Bokwa classes take place in the gym hall at KES on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30-7.30pm.
Classes cost £4.50.
