A Royal British Legion (RBL) standard bearer for Downham has proved she has high standards after coming second in a county-wide competition.

Elizabeth Davies is the standard bearer for the Downham and District area, and she received the commendation at her first competition in Norwich last Sunday.

This means that she will now be appointed as Norfolk deputy standard bearer for the coming year.

Bill Kerr, county chairman for RBL, said: “We are very proud of Elizabeth – it was her first competition!”

Traditionally, a standard bearer is a person who is responsible for carrying the disinctive flag of a unit, regiment or army.

The RBL states that to become a standard bearer should be appointed by the branch committee, and it is essential that the person selected should be physcially strong.
