A plan to build dozens of new homes on the outskirts of Swaffham has received the backing of town representatives.

A total of 82 properties are proposed in the first phase of development of the Swans Nest site, off Brandon Road.

Several nearby residents have already registered objections to the scheme, voicing concerns about the impact of the scheme on neighbouring residents and the extra pressure that is likely to be placed on local services.

But, during their meeting last Wednesday, Swaffham town council members recommended that the application, by Abel Homes, should be approved.

If the land is fully developed, as many as 240 homes could be built in the area.

And members were formally notified of Breckland Council’s decision to grant outline planning permission for the development of the whole site during the meeting.

However, a decision was deferred on a separate application for 55 new homes on New Sporle Road, so that councillors could meet the developers themselves next month.

Representatives of the Leicester-based De Merke Estates, who have submitted the planning application for the site, will now be invited to the authority’s June meeting.

Meanwhile, a proposal to build three new properties on the site of Swaffham’s former poultry and livestock auction centre in Lynn Road was supported by councillors.

And no objections were lodged to a proposed housing development off Whitsands Road.

Applicants MG Property Developments, who are based at Northwold, are seeking permission to build one house, six flats and seven maisonettes on the site.
