Hunstanton's Alan sails into retirement

AFTER 36 years introducing thousands of holidaymakers to the glorious sights and sounds of The Wash, a familiar face on Hunstanton seafront has called it a day.

Alan "The Admiral" Rudd has retired as captain of the Searles Sea Tours after taking his last boatload of passengers out on Saturday.

Mr Rudd (61), of College Drive, Heacham, said: "I have always been a man of the sea and have always enjoyed being out in the boat. It is a lot of responsibility, but I will miss the job greatly.

"I would like to thank Searles for everything they have done for me. They are a great family and it's a pleasure to work for them."

Tour operator William "Captain Willy" Searle said: "We want to say how much we appreciate Alan's work. His knowledge of being on The Wash has been a great help.

"He must have taken around 10,000 people on the trip during his time and everyone has come off with a round of applause."

Mr Searle said Mr Rudd, a self-employed roofer, would hopefully stay on to help train other people for the job.

Mr Rudd also hopes to spend more time with his wife Flora and is looking forward to watching his grandsons, Jack and Jimmy Rudd, play football at the weekend.
