Ash Dickinson, poet, writer and comedy performer, presented a poetry workshop at Springwood High School for the Year 8 and Year 11 students who are hoping to take A-level Literature.
The poet spoke about poetry, why he writes it, the benefits, his love of language, the difference between page and stage poetry, the writing process and slams. Ash performed several poems – which were crowd-pleasers!
The Year 8 students enjoyed warm-up exercises based around rhyme and poetic techniques- simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia etc; exercises based on personification or metaphor. He provided themes for the start (or structure) of a poem and allowed the students the opportunity to write and use their imagination. For each exercise he encouraged the students to read/perform their work, something they invariably loved! There was a Q&A session to finish.
