Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital is looking for two new people to join the board to help continue the changes at the site.

The Gayton Road hospital is advertising for two new non-executive directors to help scrutinise the board’s decisions.

One person who would recommend the role is Heather Farley. She joined the hospital in June last year, just after the report from the Care Quality Commission.

Mrs Farley, who combines the role with her day job as chief-executive of West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Care, said: “The hospital has come a long way in the last year and the staff have been incredible in the dedication they have shown.

“You need to understand it this is a hard job but it is hugely rewarding.

“The most rewarding thing for me was doing a straw poll on the patient experience on a ward and every single one said they could not find a bad word to say. This was a ward that was really struggling.”

As a non-executive, Mrs Farley and her colleagues scrutinise the executive’s plans for the hospital, which includes “unpicking” the statistics and facts presented.

Mrs Farley, who decided to join the board to make a difference to her local hospital, focuses on patient experience and human resources.

She said: “Formally it is a day a week. There are a number of meetings and the reading which goes with those meetings is quite extensive. We do more than a day a week.

“We put a particular amount of time at the moment because of the challenges the QEH is facing. We spend more time out and about meeting with staff and patients. It is reassuring that the changes we are making are having an impact.”

The hospital is looking for candidates with experience in clinical service, finance or structural change. Candidates will need passion for patient care. The roles carry an annual remuneration of £12,000.
