After starting off the new year with a £1,800 fundraising dance, Lynn businessman Derek Gore is now planning something more strenuous.
He will cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats this summer and with some £700 in sponsorship pledges already, he’s hoping the final figure for the Macmillan Centre at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, will run into thousands.
Derek will be accompanied by his elder brother, Richard, who lives in Norwich, and their route of 1,150 miles will take three weeks during June.
Recently, Derek and wife Zoe ran one of their popular Motown Night gigs at the Duke’s Head Hotel in Lynn, which raised the grand total of £1,833 for the centre.
That was their fifth fundraiser for the good cause and takes the combined total to around £7,000 over the years.
“Our thanks go to local businesses for their backing and all those who have supported us,” said Derek.
The couple’s next fundraising dance is booked for Saturday, April 26, and this will be held at Leziate Lakeview Park with a Motown Night and a Northern Soul gig in separate rooms.
And just a few weeks after that, Derek will be heading down to the West Country to start the cycle marathon.
He said: “I have been in training since the early part of last year and I’m now really looking forward to the challenge.
“Richard is a keen cyclist and he has done the ride twice before. We will be using some of the quieter roads which does mean it will be longer, and we’ll be aiming to cover between 50 and 70 miles each day.”
Derek, the boss of DMG Timber in Pullover Road, is pleased with the early response to the cycle ride fundraising and says that sponsorship forms are available at his business.
