The Earl of Leicester, head of the Holkham Estate, has died, aged 78, it has been announced.
A statement on the estate’s website said: “Edward Coke, 7th Earl of Leicester CBE DL, died in the early hours of Saturday 25th April.. Lady Leicester and all his children were with him at his bedside.
“Lord Leicester took over the running of Holkham in 1973 and he transformed the estate as well as playing an important role in public life both nationally and locally.
“Lord Leicester will be sorely missed by all who knew him and worked for him over the years. Our thoughts are with his family.”
The news comes little more than two weeks after Lord Leicester declared his support for UKIP at the coming elections.
His cousin, Toby Coke, is the party’s candidate for the North West Norfolk constituency.
