£280,000 investment at Bawsey centre
OWNERS of a recycling centre at Bawsey have just spent more than £280,000 improving the site for their growing numbers of environmentally-conscious customers.
The two companies on site, Peter Bacon Recycling and Baco-Compak (Norfolk) are able to recycle around 85 per cent of the metal and other waste materials that come in from industrial, business and domestic customers.
The money invested improving the road network across the three-acre site will make life easier for everyone, according to Stephen Bacon.
"We have around 2 million worth of machinery dealing with the waste materials, but until now the roads were a mess. This has totally changed and we hope it will help us to encourage more customers to consider recycling their waste," he said.
This is the 50th anniversary year for the Bacon family business. It was set up by Peter Bacon who, at the age of 23, started selling firewood from the back of a lorry. Rather than returning home with an empty vehicle, he started collecting scrap metal en route and storing it at Bawsey. Now in his seventies, he is still very much in command, with his son Stephen in charge of the metal scrapyard and daughter Leslie Bacon running Baco-Compak, which is the waste re-cycling operation which deals with plastics, paper, cardboard and rubble.
"We started recycling waste in the 1970s and with the public and industry becoming more aware of environmental issues, this side of the business is expanding all the time and especially so over the last five years," said Stephen Bacon.
The company, which holds a Royal Warrant, can provide skips and bins of all sizes for the collection of waste and provides official documentation for clients to prove that they are recycling their unwanted materials.
Mr Bacon also pointed out that there some financial rewards.
"Metals are making very good prices at the moment and, just as an example, certain grades of scrap iron can fetch up to 140 a ton," he said.
