£40k play area pact at Swaffham
YOUNG and old will benefit a new sheltered housing scheme on the former bowling green behind Swaffham Conservative Club.
Breckland Council's development control committee has given the green light to Equity Holdings and Investments' plan to provide 22 retirement homes for over-60s on the site, between London Street and Campingland.
And under a legal agreement accompanying the consent, the developer must give 40,000 towards a multi-use games area, which is likely to be provided at the Haspalls Road recreation ground.
Principal planning officer Nick Moys said: "We are aware Swaffham Town Council has plans to develop a games area at the recreation ground and, on the face of it, this would seem a good use of the money."
He said the developer would be providing six affordable units among the 22 homes, as another condition of the approval.
Some councillors had been concerned about the access to the site being from Beech Close, as this is heavily used by people going to the community centre and doctors' surgery at Campingland, as well as by parents dropping off and picking up children from Swaffham First and Infants School.
But officers told them a planning inspector, ruling on a previous application, had said there was no suitable alternative and an objection on those grounds was unlikely to be upheld.
The new sheltered housing will have an on-site warden and an out-of-hours alarm call system.
