£50,000 appeal to preserve Magdalen windows
A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched in Magdalen to help restore the rare medieval stained glass windows at the parish church.
The church needs to raise 50,000 to cover the cost of the work, which will see the images of more than 20 saints restored to their former glory in the windows which decorate the church.
Secretary Alan Sherfield said the windows have provoked considerable interest, with people travelling from far and wide to marvel at the designs.
He told the Lynn News: "There are none in the other Lynn churches, the nearest is Oxborough and Ely Cathedral and it is believed they were made by the same people who did Walsingham.
"Most of them show the saints going back to the year 110 and then through to the 1200s. They are quite small in design but there are lots of them."
Work on the windows forms part of a wider restoration project at the historic Grade I listed building which will also include new guttering and a new floor.
Mr Sherfield said the church has been able to gain grant money from bodies such as English Heritage but it also relies on the generosity and support of local people at numerous fundraising events.
He added: "It is a struggle, but people in the village do give generously. It is their church and it is there for them."
To help boost the fundraising effort the church will be hosting a Last Night of the Proms concert, featuring the Clarkson Singers from Wisbech, on Saturday.
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost 5, which includes a glass of wine.
The concert will be followed by a harvest tea from 4.30pm on Sunday and a harvest thanksgiving service at 6.30pm.
