50-year-old Lynn fete scrapped
A SUMMER fete which has raised tens of thousands of pounds for Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been scrapped due to falling attendances and takings.
The event has been organised by Lynn Hospitals League of Friends for around 50 years and has provided crucial funding toward patient care.
But after last year's fete was met with a disappointing response, despite the best efforts of league members, the event has now been abandoned.
League of Friends chairman Mrs Pat Roome told the Lynn News: "I think fetes have just about had their day, attendances are falling and we are all getting older.
"It has been one of our biggest fundraisers, it is such a shame, but what can you do?
"The amount of help we now get is abysmal.
"We depend an awful lot on outside help but with all the changes at the hospital, and the possible closure of the social club, it has become very difficult.
"This has not been a decision we have taken lightly but I do not think we have much choice."
Mrs Roome said last year's fete raised around 7,000, the majority of which was generated through the grand prize draw.
Hospital spokesman Richard Humphries said the fete may have suffered from the fact people now have more demands on their time.
He added: "Perhaps the entertainment value of the hospital fete is not what it once was.
"It is a pity as it was a great institution but there are other ways you can help the hospital."
The Friends will now concentrate on raising money through book sales at the main entrance to the hospital and regular tombola stalls.
A spring fair has also been planned at Clenchwarton Village Hall from 2pm on Saturday, April 12.
Bric-a-brac, books and unwanted gifts, which can be used as tombola prizes, can be donated at the League of Friends shop, which is also in desperate need of more volunteers.
