A10 CRANE CRASH: Car driver suffered stroke
A car “jerked” in front of a mobile crane after the driver suffered a sudden stroke, an inquest heard on Monday.
Patrick Eaton, 86, of Avon Road, South Wootton, died in Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital two days after the accident on the A10 at Denver on June 28.
Mr Eaton and his wife Violet were waiting in a Volkswagen Golf at the Ryston Road junction when the car lurched forward into the path of the 76-tonne crane, driven by Paul Marsh.
Witness Andrew Harrison, who had been following Mr Eaton, told the Lynn inquest that he had saw the Golf “jerk” forward into the carriageway.
PC Lee Smart, an investigator with the serious collision investigation team, said the car was in third gear and that Mr Eaton may never have intended to pull out.
The cause of death was an intracerebral haemorrhage with a coronary artery atherosclerosis and a road accident listed as secondary issues.
Coroner William Armstrong recorded a narrative verdict. He said Mr Marsh was not to blame and that Mr Eaton has suffered “sudden, spontaneous natural event.”
Mr Armstrong said: “I want to emphasise what happened was something wholly beyond Patrick’s control.
“Patrick was a man of strong opinions and a good sense of humour. He was someone with a positive attitude towards life.”
