A47 DEATH CRASH: Safety improvements for A47 Walsoken junction

A Norfolk MP says improvements will be made at the A47 junction where two Sutton Bridge sisters died last month.

South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss has received confirmation from Transport minister Stephen Hammond that safety improvements will be made to the Broadend Road junction at Walsoken.

Tamzin, 10, and seven-year-old Jessica Portor died in Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital after suffering head injuries when the Ford Focus they were travelling in rolled and ended up near a ditch on December 27.

Mr Hammond says the Highways Agency is preparing a safety scheme and hopes to allocate funding to allow the scheme to proceed in 2013/14.

In a letter, Mr Hammond states: “The Highways Agency is currently preparing a safety scheme for this junction that will provide modified road markings and the installation of vehicle activated signing on both the east and westbound approaches to the junction.”

Ms Truss is delighted with the response.

She said: “It is very positive news that the Highways Agency is implementing safety measures at Broadend Road Junction.

“I have stood on the side of the junction with members of Walsoken Parish Council and witnessed first hand how dangerous the crossing is.

“The A47 is a major route through Norfolk with local residents, businesses and tourism all relying on the road.

“It is crucial therefore that it can safely handle the volume of vehicles and I will continue to lobby the Department for Transport for the road to be upgraded to a national strategic route and for full dualling to take place.”

Tamzin and Jessica, who attended Sutton Bridge’s Westmere School, are believed to have been travelling to the cinema with their father Allan, 38, his partner, Marie Easter, and their 12-year-old brother when they died.

Police have put out an appeal to find a red car which was seen travelling towards Lynn at the time of the crash, which happened at 6.40pm.
